Project details

One of Switzerland's most impressive projects of 2016

As the site is located on the capital's rail hub, countless interfaces with the existing environment had to be considered.

Situation

Alpenda was entrusted with the construction of this new complex on the existing Schanzenpost site in the heart of the capital. The new complex exploits the potential of the famous site, giving it an attractive face and transforming it into a new hub between the railway station and the Längegasse district.

Solution

Alpenda’s renovation of this district was carried out in four phases: construction of the new building on the site of the former postal station, conversion of the existing office building, construction of the new Schanzenpost and renovation and construction of new streets and squares in the surrounding area. of the new Schanzenpost, and the renovation and construction of new streets and squares in the surrounding area.

Deconstructing the site for over a year already posed particular challenges for the team. During the demolition work, up to 80,000 pedestrians crossed the site every day.

For example, during the dismantling of the distribution center along the Schanzenbrücke bridge, Alpenda worked with a special protective wall.

While While heavy construction equipment and a 100-ton excavator were at work upstairs, SBB trains were constantly moving in and out on twelve tracks downstairs.

The completed complex extends over a total total length of 180 metres along the Schanzenbrücke and Postbrücke bridges. The two new buildings and the completely refurbished building provide a total of 26,000 m2 of office space and 10,000 m2 for commercial lettings.

Special features

The false ceiling above the platforms was fitted with an additional waterproofing layer and a layer of asphalt up to 20 centimetres thick, so that passengers can get on and off trains with dry feet, even during construction work.
