Preserving architectural value over the decades

The jewel in Montreux's hotel crown.

Situation

The Montreux-Palace is in a remarkable state of preservation, thanks to the almost constant care it has received. The venerable and important building, located on the upper edge of the lakeside road in the eastern sector of Montreux, is an exemplary case of durability.

In fact, the building reveals many architectural details that have not been altered by age. The inevitable additions and alterations made over the years have generally been carried out with care and respect for the original character of the building.

On the other hand, the introduction of the modern infrastructures and facilities enjoyed by the establishment, which enable it to compete internationally with the greatest, was done discreetly and efficiently, without negatively influencing the architectural quality of this late 19thᵉ century landmark.

Project

Ensure hotel operations without interference from the construction site. The east and west wings of the Palace house 57 rooms on 5 and 6 levels respectively. Their total renovation, including that of the technical installations, heating, sanitary facilities, electricity and ventilation/air conditioning, is part of the program of interventions envisaged to maintain the high quality of the hotel’s welcome.

In addition to the work itself, the key feature of this program was the way in which it was carried out. Indeed, given the requirements of the operation, no site personnel or materials could pass through the interior of the building, as all access to the carefully planned site areas had to be gained from the outside.

On the other hand, the noisy work was carried out on the basis of very restrictive opening hours, and the sectors under construction had to be perfectly isolated, as customers should not be inconvenienced in any way by the work in progress.

The building elements that make up the vast rooms, marked by a style of architecture that makes use of numerous details such as moldings, painted and decorated woodwork and elaborate accessories, have been refurbished in keeping with their original features.

Added to this is the choice of materials, finishes and tones, in line with the tastes of the clientele specific to this type of establishment.

Sober and luxurious at the same time, bathrooms now offer a full range of equipment, rich in comfort and decorative details; their modernity is asserted by the choice of fixtures and fittings, as well as by the adoption of Carrara marble and white tile coverings.

Carpets and natural woods on the bedroom floors balance out the staffwork on the walls and ceilings. In addition to the renovation work, the turnkey contract awarded to Unirenova included furniture and decoration.
